Don Kuzy Memorial Scholarship
Don Kuzy, Holy Cross Alumni Class of 1980, volunteered much of his time to his local YMCA. Don led a principled life, often choosing the more difficult path by saying and doing what was right as opposed to choosing the path of least resistance. The following was shared at Don Kuzy’s eulogy:
Don spent much of his time at his local YMCA, as he was a very active volunteer in their programs. When scheduling conflicts occurred, this community center often offered its facility to other neighboring centers and vice versa.
One day, Don entered the YMCA and noticed that the portrait of Jesus normally prominently positioned at the center of the foyer, was missing. When he inquired as to its whereabouts, he learned the portrait was taken down, tucked in a closet, with no real plan to return it to its position and vague reason as to why it had been taken down. Don quickly surmised that it was as a result of one of these reciprocal visits where someone presumably complained about it.
Don quickly sprang into action and spoke to the Board of Directors, and anyone who would listen as his view was that the ‘C’ in YMCA stands for Christian, as in Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and as a private organization, the YMCA should embrace its roots and celebrate Christianity while simultaneously including and respecting those of a different faith.
After some convincing, the portrait was hung back up, but not in its original location, which was at the entrance. Disappointedly, the portrait of Jesus was displayed off to the side, around a turn and in a corner. Upon learning of this half-hearted resolution, Don took matters into his own hands. He took the portrait down and moved it himself to its original location – prominently displayed at the entrance, proclaiming, “No one puts Jesus in the corner!”
Shortly before his passing in January 2014, Don gained stewardship of the portrait while the YMCA was undergoing renovations with its final display location still unresolved. Don displayed it proudly in his home, ensuring that it would never be in a corner or in a closet ever again.
The Kuzy family would like to thank Holy Cross High School Principal Dennis Guida for offering a special home for this magnificent portrait of Jesus, entitled Jesus Light of the World by Warner Sallman. Holy Cross is a worthy and honorable location where students, faculty and families will appreciate His image for years to come!
